It appears the only person who can keep Daniel Basile from being executed tonight for a contract killing is Governor Bob Holden. Basile’s lawyers and the husband of the woman Basile was convicted of killing have asked the Governor to commute Basile’s sentence to life without parole. Basile has been under a death sentence since 1994, convicted of killing Elizabeth DeCaro in St. Charles in 1992. The prosecutor says her husband, Richard, promised to give Basile a vehicle, money, and other things. Richard DeCaro is doing life for conspiracy to have his wife killed. Both he and Basile say they’re innocent.
