Cardinal Hall of Famer Enos “Country” Slaughter is in critical condition in a Durham, N.C. hospital. He’s undergone two emergency surgeries in the last two weeks, one on his colon and another to repair damage from stomach ulcers. In his 19 seasons in the majors, Slaughter hit .300 and played in five World Series, winning four of them. He’s most remembered for his “Mad Dash”. In Game 7 of the 1946 World Series, he scored from first for the game-winning run. There’s a bronze statue commemorating the moment outside Busch Stadium.
