The Cardinals skid continued yesterday with a 4-1 loss to the Expos. The Redbirds managed only six hits off Montreal and their only run came as a result of Jim Edmonds ground out in the fifth inning. Cardinal starter Jason Simontacchi pitched seven innings, allowing three runs and five hits. Simontacchi was charged with the loss, dropping to 7-4 on the season. The focal point of the evening for the Cardinals came in the seventh inning. Reliever Steve Kline allowed a run off two hits. One of the hits was a double to pitcher Joey Eischen. After the third out, Kline began throwing things around in the Cardinal dug out. Umpire Bruce Froemming reprimanded him and Kline became visibly angered. He had to be restrained by teammates. He told Froemming to “Go eat another cheeseburger”. The loss now puts St. Louis dangerously close to sharing first place with Houston. The Astros win last night puts them just a game out of the top spot in the N.L. Central.
