Former K.C. Mayor Wins Primary For State Senate Seat

August 7, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

Former Kansas City Mayor Charles Wheeler has pulled an upset by winning the Democratic primary for a State Senate seat. Wheeler, who will be 76 on Saturday, was the Mayor of Kansas City almost a quarter-century ago. He has dumped State Representative Henry Rizzo on the primary. Rizzo had been heavily favored by Democratic Party leaders in Jackson County. There is no Republican candidate for Wheeler to run against in November. But there might be an independent – State Representative Thomas Hoppe, who pulled out of the Democratic primary to circulate petitions as anindependent. He’s still waiting for the Secretary of State to say if he had enough valid signatures.
