Senator Jean Carnahan and former St. Louis area Congressman Jim Talent has won their parties’ nominations to face off in November’s election for the U.S. Senate seat Carnahan was appointed to following the posthumous election victory of her late husband, Governor Mel Carnahan. Carnahan easily defeated her only opponent in the Democratic primary, while Talent had no trouble coming out on top in a field of five candidates for the Republican nomination. Carnahan vows to promote what she calls a centrist viewpoint during the campaign. Talent has renewed his call for debates, saying Missouri voters have the right to learn the differences between the two candidates on such issues as missile defense and the estate tax.
