One of the many groups that will be keeping a close eye on the results of tomorrow’s vote on Proposition B, the transportation measure, will be one from northeast Missouri. SMART – Students of Missouri Assisting Rural & Urban Transportation – was formed shortly after a Canton High School student lost her life in a traffic crash on U.S. 61 two years ago. SMART’s Patti Meldrum believes expanding a two-lane stretch of the highway in northeast Missourito a four-lane road will cut down on accidents. And, she says SMART’s effort will go on, regardless of what happens on Tuesday. Since that student’s death two years ago, three more Canton High School students have been killed in traffic crashes on what Meldrum calls a very dangerous stretch of U.S. 61.
