Damian Moss and John Smoltz combined for a one-hitter as the Braves topped the Cardinals 2-1. Gary Sheffield’s ninth inning home run broke a 1-1 tie, ending the game. Smoltz got the win in relief. The outcome was especially unfortunate for Andy Benes who made his best outing of the year, going 7 1/3 inings, allowing one run off four hits with eight strikeouts. Dave Veres got the loss, allowing the home run to Sheffield. The Cards were swept by the Braves and have lost five of their last six. Their lead in the N.L Central has dwindled to two games over the Reds. The Astros trail by three.
