One prominent face and voice have been noticeably absent from the campaign for Proposition B. Governor Bob Holden has been mostly on the sidelines. The Governor has supported the transporation tax package but hasn’t made any major public appearances for it since he preached to the choir at the highway users conference a month ago. He says he’s been on the sidelines because campaign organizers seem to want it that way. Some opponents think Holden is staying aloof from the issue because he doesn’t want to waste political capital on a losing deal. Supporters won’tpublicly agree. Holden thinks the election will be close. He hopes voters understand changes that have been made at the Transporation Department to make the Department more accountable. He hopes the public gives those changes the chance, and the resources, to work. He says he has his fingers crossed.
