The buyouts have started in Herculaneum. Doe Run Lead Company is buying properties contaminated by lead. Twenty-six families with the biggest pollution problems are getting the first offers. In all, 160 houses will be bought. Doe Run says it has paid the first five families to agree to its offers a total of $385,000.
