Archaeological research near Fort Osage turns up evidence people were in the area 1,500 years ago or more. Fort Osage is near Sibley, in Jackson County. It’s the reconstruction of a fort that operated there from 1808 to 1812. Excavations are underway at the site of a planned visitors center. It’s hoped the center can be opened in two years, in time for the Lewis and Clark bicentennial.
