MoDOT Questions Safety Of Five-Lane Roadways

July 9, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

Missouri Department of Tranportation officials have found five-lane roadways are the most dangerous road type in the state. Five-lane roads have two lanes of traffic going in each direction with a common left-turn lane in the middle. MoDOT engineer Scott Meyer says there’s the danger of cars colliding head-on in the left-turn lane. And, he says there’s another danger for drivers who try to make a left turn onto the five-lane road. Meyer would like to see the five-lane roads converted to four-lanes with curbed medians separating the traffic and controlled left-turn andU-turn points.
