Senate Race Polls Show Contest Tight

April 30, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

Two public opinion polls – one showing incumbent Senator Jean Carnahan with a lead, the other putting former St. Louis area Congressman Jim Talent in front – indicate Missouri’s U.S. Senate race remains very tight. An American Viewpoint survey, conducted for Talent and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, gives the Republican challenger a 48 percent to 44 percent lead over Carnahan among those polled. Another poll, conducted by Zogby International for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and KMOV Television in St. Louis, gives the incumbent Democrat a slight lead among likely voters surveyed – 49.6 percent to 43.9 percent. The survey also shows Carnahan leads by almost 11 percentage points among women, while Carnahan and Talent are running neck-and-neck among men.
