Meningitis Outbreak Moves Special Olympics From Fort Leonard Wood

April 25, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

The Special Olympics, which have been held in May at Fort Leonard Wood for 26 years, will not be held there next month because of meningitis outbreaks. Three cases have been confirmed at the Fort, one fatal. State health officials have recommended the event be moved, if possible, because they still don’t know why a 12-year-old boy died at the post last month. And, the Department worries that Special Olympians might be more susceptible to disease or complications than others. Special Olympics officials are meeting today to see if there’s another location available.
