Cards 6, Brewers 5…Again

April 12, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

Tino Martinez walked with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run, as the Cardinals beat the Brewers 6-5 at Busch Stadium. It was the second straight game Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk, and the third straight game in which the Cards beat Milwaukee 6-5. Only ten times before in baseball history has the same team swept a series by identical scores in each game. Mike Matheny hit a 3-run homer for St. Louis. Bud Smith pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He didn’t walk a batter. Dave Veres picked up the win in relief, despite walking two men in 1 1/3 innings. Steve Kline got the last two outs to pick up his first save.
