A buy-out plan for families living around the lead smelter in Herculaneum could cost the Doe Run Company $11-Million. The Doe Run plan is supported by Governor Holden. It would buy 20 houses near the 110-year-old smelter. It would make offers to another 140 houses located farther away from the smelter. The State Department of Health has reported that 56-percent of thechildren who live near the smelter had elevated lead levels in their blood.
