Smith hammered in spring training

March 27, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

Cardinals pitcher Bud Smith was roughed up in a spring training game against Florida Tuesday. Smith allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings, as the Cardinals lost 12-4. Kevin Millar hit a grand slam off Smith to lead the Marlins. Smith was considered a likely member of the starting rotation when the season starts, but two straight bad outings have left the Cardinals open to sending him to Memphis, or to the bullpen. Coupled with the arm trouble of Rick Ankiel, Smith’s downfall could make a big dent in the St. Louis pitching corps, which was counted on as a strength by manager Tony Larussa.
