Plans by a few colleges in Missouri to change their names runs into opposition in the House, but the body advances the effort anyway. Not only does Southwest Missouri State University want to become Missouri State, but Missouri Southern State College in Joplin and MissouriWestern State College in St. Joseph both want to become universities; and Harris Stowe College might want to be known as a university. Opposition comes from House members loyal to the University of Missouri-Columbia. All those institutions wanting to change their names promise it won’tcost the state anything. Private money will be used to make the change. Another favorable vote sends the bill to the Senate.
