Senator Jean Carnahan has made it official, signing the candidacy papers needed to run for the U.S. Senate seat she holds. Carnahan was appointed to the seat following the posthumous election victory of her husband, the late Governor Mel Carnahan. Senator Carnahan says she looks forward to waging what is expected to be a spirited campaign. Her formal filing comes just days after former St. Louis area Congressman Jim Talent filed his candidacy papers to run as the Republican candidate in the race. Senator Carnahan has been involved in many political campaigns, most with her late husband. But she has not run a campaign of her own since the 1960s when she ran for a Democratic Committee position in South Dillon Township, near Rolla.
