Senate Asked To Clamp Down On Bogus Air Bags

February 28, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

The State Senate is considering legislation that would make it a felony for anyone to knowingly install a phony air bag in any vehicle. The legislation focuses on repair shops that fail to replace air bags following accidents, and don’t bother to inform the owners of the crashed cars. Senator John Loudon of Ballwin, the sponsor, says theprofit motive drives these people. Loudon would like to see those responsible for this crime facing a $5,000 fine, a year in prison, or both. Loudon says there are no known cases of fake air bag installation in Missouri, but in California, 1 in 25 cars needing repairs will get bogusair bags.
