The state law that keeps schools from starting classes until September 1st unless they say their students are needed on the farm is under its annual attack. This is one of the few issues on which all of the education interests seem to agree – getting rid of the school opening law. It’s been called a hypocrtical law that makes school districts lie. School districts can start before September 1st if they claim their students need to be out early in the Spring for planting – at least that’s the theory behind the agriculture exemption. Critics say nobody is fooled by that that anymore.
