Legislators will have a law designed to protect senior citizens better in front of them this session. The Protection of the Elderly Act will address inadequacies in nursing homes. The act would allow law enforcement agencies to share information on elderly abuse, as well as allowing more inspections of the homes with bad records – fewer inspections of those with good records. Similar legislation failed in the Senate at least twice before. Butthe bill’s sponsor, Representative Craig Hosmer of Springfield, says concessions are being made to gain Senate approval this time. That asset limit is just under one thousand dollars. Lillian Metzgerwith the Silver-Haired Legislature says her members like the asset limit in this bill, but they want it raised at least three thousand dollars as a separate measure.
