The Missouri Department of Transportation is increasing security at the state’s airports. Missouri has 129 public-use airports, including eight that handle commercial traffic. The eight handling commercial traffic are regulated by the federal government, but MoDOT provides support through funding, safety inspections, and other assistance at the remaining 121 facilities. MoDOT Director Henry Hungerbeeler says everyone’s awareness of the importance of security has been raised following the September 11th attacks and last weekend’s incident in which a teenager flew a small plane into a building in Tampa, Florida.
