Gvoernor Bob Holden has announced millions of dollars in new cuts in state programs and operations. The plan calls for another $212-Million in cuts, running the total amount of cuts in state operations and services since July to more than one-half billion dollars. Some things are protected: aid to public schools, public safety agencies, nd programs for children and poor and elderly adults. Higher education takes the biggest single hit – almost $19-Million – which has already triggered mid-year tuition increases at some institutions. No layoffs of state workers are included, although a lot of jobs will go unfilled indefinately.
