LaRussa Tells Paper McGwire May Retire

November 1, 2001 By admin Leave a Comment

Could this be the end of the road for St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire? Tony LaRussa tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch today that he thinks Mark McGwire will retire. The 38-year old first baseman struggled in 2001, hitting just .187 although he did hit 29 home runs. His troubles continued in St. Louis’ first-round playoff series loss to Arizona. In that series McGwire went just 1-11 with six strikeouts. LaRussa added in the article that he expects McGwire to make an official announcement on his future next month.
