A garden between the Gvoernor’s Mansion and the state Capitol in Jefferson City has been formally named the Carnahan Memorial Garden in honor of Governor Mel Carnahan, who was killed in a place crash a year ago. The Governor’s widow, Senator Jean Carnahan, her children and other family members joined Governor Bob Holden, his wife and statewide officials for a ceremony in the garden. Holden says naming the garden for Carnahan was a fitting way for the state “to commemorate the wonderful life and accomplishments of this great man – not just for the sake of those of us who were fortunate enough to believe that public service is good and noble and worthy of our lives.” Holden also announced he has declared October as Community Service Month in Missouri in Mel Carnahan’s memory.
