Cardinals Eliminated After Heartbreaker

October 15, 2001 By admin Leave a Comment

The season is over for the St. Louis Cardinals after they lost Game #5 of their National League Division Series to the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 on Sunday. Tony Womack won the game for the D-Backs with a two-out RBI single off Steve Kline (0-1) in the bottom of the ninth inning. Earlier in the at-bat, Womack had failed on a suicide squeeze attempt which got a runner thrown out at the plate. J.D. Drew accounted for the only Cardinal run in this one with an 8th-inning solo home run. Curt Schilling (2-0) wins his second game of the series with a complete game six-hitter. Matt Morris gets a no-decision after allowing just one run on seven hits in eight innings. The Diamondbacks will now take on Atlanta in the National League Championship Series.
