The St. Louis Cardinals expanded their lead in the National League wildcard race to three games over San Francisco with a 3-2 win in Houston. Woody Williams (14-9) pitched a complete-game three-hitter to improve to 6-1 in a Cardinal uniform. The righthander walked three while striking out nine. At the plate, Craig Paquette knocked in what proved to be the winning run with an 8th-inning RBI single. Jim Edmonds added two hits and a run scored in the win.
