Smith Makes History in San Diego

September 4, 2001 By admin Leave a Comment

Bud Smith became the first Cardinals pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Jose Jimenez back in 1999 as he dominated the San Diego Padres on Labor Day 4-0. Smith walked four while striking out seven in improving to 4-2 in this his rookie season. The no-hitter is the ninth for the Cardinals since 1900. Smith made the final out himself, catching a one-hopper off the bat of Phil Nevin and throwing to first for the out. With the win and an Astro loss, the Cardinals move to within six games of first in the National League Central.
