Fernando Vina homered and knocked in four runs while Placido Polanco laced four hits as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Milwaukee 7-2 last night, snapping a six-game losing streak. Mike Matthews made an emergency start on the mound for St. Louis replacing righthander Darryl Kile who was scrathced with back trouble. Matthews (3-3) was brilliant, allowing just three hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings. He did not allow a run and he struck out eight. Ben Sheets takes the loss for the Brewers. The rookie righthander falls to 10-5 on the season by allowing five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work. The Cardinals win on the road for just the second time in their last 14 tries.
