Missouri schoolchildren are enjoying their summer vacation, but school administrators are not taking time off. The administrators are working hard to fill teachers’ desks for the coming school year. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education says Missouri school districts are having trouble finding teachers for the coming school year. As an example, Jefferson City has 300 applicants this summer. Normally, that number would approach the 1,500 mark. Many educators are blaming low wages for the decline in interest.
