Gene Stechschulte’s throwing error in the ninth allowed the go-ahead run to score as the St. Louis Cardinals dropped a 10-9 decision to the visiting Cincinnati Reds. Stechschulte (0-4) allowed two runs on three hits in the ninth inning to take the loss. The Reds also did significant damage against Cardinal starter Andy Benes, touching him four home runs and seven runs overall. Fernando Vina led the way in defeat for St. Louis, knocking in a career-high five runs. With the loss, the Cardinals fall 5 1/2 games off the pace in the National League Central as the Chicago Cubs extended their lead with a 4-2 win over the New York Mets.
