Missouri has struck a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals to have the state help pay for a new downtown ballpark for the team. The entire project would come with a $646-million price tag. $435-million of that cost would be paid by the team, with the state and St. Louis County splitting $140-million, and the City of St. Louis paying no more than $60-million. Governor Holden calls it a fiscally responsible deal for the state. Economic Development Director Joe Driskill says it’s good because it will bring in more revenues than it costs. The deal is a memorandum of understanding at this stage. It must still be approved by the Legislature. Driskill is hoping lawmakers take up the matter when the new session begins in January.
