300 people – wealthy and not so wealthy, young and old, urban and rural – gathered at the University of Missouri-Columbia’s Alumni Center for a Congressional hearing on Social Security. The House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Social Security held the first of what it hopes will be a series of “Outside the Beltway” hearings on the matter. The meeting was hosted by area Congressman Kenny Hulshof, who says he was pleased with the suggestions put forward by those attending. Prior to the hearing, several opponents of privatization held a news conference to protest the idea.
