Attorney General Mulls Over License Plate Decision

June 18, 2001 By admin Leave a Comment

Attorney General Jay Nixon is considering how to proceed following a recent appelate court ruling prohibiting the state from banning a white supremacist message on a personalized license plate. Jefferson City resident Mary Lewis wants her plates to read “Aryan-1.” The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled the state must issue the plates. Nixon’s argument that the plates might spark violence wasn’t enough to convince the judges. Nixon does not see this as a free speech case and might appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
