Mike Sweeney took Gene Stechschulte deep with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The victory gives the Royals a three-game sweep of the interleague series. Doug Henry (2-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief. The Royals bullpen combined to pitch five scoreless innings of relief in the win. Jeff Suppan made it three straight quality starts for the Royals as he allowed just two runs on four hits in eight innings of work. Mike Matthews started for St. Louis and allowed the first two Royals runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Stechschulte (0-3) took the loss for St. Louis. The Cardinals finish their nine-game road-trip with a 1-8 record. The Royals now lead the all-time regular season series with St. Louis 9-6 after this sweep.
