The annual amateur baseball draft began on Tuesday and both the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals selected pitchers in the first round. The Royals picked 9th overall and went with Marshall, Texas High School righthander “Colt” Griffin. Griffin was considered the hardest-thrower available in the draft. He has reportedly reached 101 m.p.h. in his career. The Cardinals picked 28th in Round #1 and selected righthander Justin Pope from Central Florida University.Pope set a collegiate record last season with 38 consectutive scoreless innings.
