The reported decision by Senator Jim Jeffords of Vermont to bolt the Republican Party to sit as an Independent would change the power structure in the U.S. Senate – putting Democrats in charge. Senator Christopher Bond says things have not gone very smoothly in the 50-50 Senate. And, he believes the Jeffords departure will make it even tougher for the sides to get along. There have been rumors conservative Democrats, like Zell Miller of Georgia and Ben Nelson of Nebraska, might jump ship to join the GOP. But Bond does not see that happening anytime soon.
