Senate Debates Transportation – Goes Nowhere

May 17, 2001 By admin Leave a Comment

A financing program for Missouri’s transportation needs is finally aired in the State Senate. But the program is still stalled. Republicans have openly opposed any tax increases for transportaiton. Governor Bob Holden and Democrats have argued that money needs to be raised now to build and fix roads and bridges. Republican Senate leaders have vowed not to block debate on a tax package, but that debate has been bogged down with amendment after amendment. The bill was withdrawn after about three hours of debate. It appears unlikely the legislation will pass during this session.
