Cards Overcome Ankiel’s Ineffectiveness

May 11, 2001 By admin Leave a Comment

The St. Louis Cardinals completed a four-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday with an 11-5 win. St. Louis pounded out 17 hits in the victory, which overshadowed an awful performance by Rick Ankiel. The Cardinal lefthander lasted only three-plus innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He walked five and uncorked a pair of wild pitches. In addition, three other Ankiel offerings hit the backstop when no one was on base. Mike Matthews (1-0)picked up the win out of the bullpen for St. Louis. ALbert Pujols and Jim Edmonds homered in the win for the Cards.
