Stadium and arena projects are dominating a lot of the conversations at the State Capitol these days. The St. Louis Cardinals’ proposal to have the state help the team build a new downtown stadium is getting a lot of attention, but other parts of the state are looking to Jefferson City, as well. In Kansas City, for instance, the Royals and Chiefs want tax breaks. Governor Bob Holden says he’s keeping an open mind with projects in St. Louis and other cities throughout the state. But he insists the interests of the taxpayers must be first and foremost in any project, and he will not support any idea that does not benefit the people who pay the bills.
