More than eighteen years after he shot and killed three people in a St. Louis pawn shop, Mose Young has been executed by lethal injection at the prison in Potosi. The time between the commission of the murders and the execution was lengthy — as was the time between injection of the lethal mix and the time of death. The first of three drugs was injected at 12:02, the second at 12:03, and the final one at 12:04. While most inmates adminstered the lethal dose die within a few minutes, Young was not pronounced dead until 12:14. There were no visible signs of trauma. Corrections officials say death cannot be pronounced until all vital signs have ceased. They say the unusual length of time between completion of injection and death – nine minutes – might be attributed to Young’s size. At five feet, eight inches, he weighed 224 pounds.
