Hernandez Shuts the Door . . . Finally; Royals Win

April 16, 2001 By admin Leave a Comment

Mike Sweeney capped a four-run first inning with a two-run home run and Roberto Hernandez creaked the door shut in the ninth as the Kansas City Royals held off the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2. The Royals scored all their runs in the first off loser Cris Carpenter. Mark Quinn knokced in the first with an RBI single, Jermaine Dye the second with an RBI groundout and Sweeney capped the frame with his third home run of the season. Blake Stein allowed just two runs in six innings to earn the win. Hernandez loaded the bases in the ninth with two outs, but he got Alex Gonzalez to ground out to end the game and earn his second save.
