Governor Bob Holden’s initiative on women’s health has already passed the House and is now before the Senate. Supporters feel good about the legislation’s chances in the Senate, but they acknowledge passage is far from a sure thing. Planned Parenthood wants Senators to follow the lead of State Representatives in passing the measure, but it wants even more out of the General Assembly. Planned Parenthood and other pro-choice groups are calling for the defeat of any legislation that stands in the way of choice on the abortion issue. The Governor’s health initiative avoids the abortion issue, focusing on women’s access to ob/gyns and other health measures. The senate has not yet set a date for debate on the legislation.
