Cardinals Win Dramatic Home Opener

Ray Lankfors scampered home with the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals outlasted the Colorado Rockies in their home opener 3-2. Bobby Bonnila opened the ninth inning with a double to left for the Redbirds, Lankford then followed with a sacrifice bunt. Both runners were sfae, however, when pitcher Gabe White threw late to third base. Following an intentional walk and a force play at home, new pitcher Jose Jimenez uncorked the wild pitch that cost the Rockies the game. Albert Pujols homered for the Cards, Larry Walker went deep for Colorado. Mike Timlin picks up the win in relief for St. Louis. [Photo by Bill Greenblatt, UPI]
