Missouri Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson is headed to Cuba as part of a U.S. delegation trying to encourage the sale of rice to the communist country. The Cape Girardeau Republican wants to see rice from Missouri and other states sold to the Cubans as part of an effort to lift the food and medicine embargo that has existed since 1962. Emerson says it is perfectly legal for American rice to be sold to Cuba, provided it goes through a third party, such as Canada or Mexico. Emerson says it will be the task of the delegation to convince the Cubans they can stretch their buying power by purchasing food from the U.S. instead of from Vietnam and other current sources.
