A bill in the State Legislature would make it harder to sue a bar or restaurant for the damage done by a person to whom liquor was served. It is a crime in Missouri for a dram shop to sell liquor to minors, obviously intoxicated people, anyone appearing to be intoxicated, or to a habitual drunkard. The extent of the exposure that bar or restaurant would be open to in a civil lawsuit is being debated by state lawmakers. A bill approved by the House would limit the dram shop’s liability in the event someone engages in wrongdoing after leaving the bar or restaurant. The bill moves to the Senate.
