Cardinals Make Pitch To State Lawmakers For New Ballpark

March 13, 2001 By admin Leave a Comment

State lawmakers are considering legislation that would see the state partially fund a new ballpark for the St. Louis Cardinals. Several State Senators and Representatives are behind the effort. They fear the Cardinals might move out of downtown St. Louis to the suburbs, or even to Illinois, unless the team gets a new ballpark to replace Busch Stadium. And, they’re concerned a move out of St. Louis will be devastating to the city’s economy. Team officials testified before legislative committees, saying they are committed to keeping the Cardinals in St. Louis. But they add the team is a business and must do what is necessary to remain viable.
