Veteran legislators often say it takes four to six years to learn how the legislative system works. But now an effort is underway to give new lawmakers a jump start on their careers. Reeds Spring Senator Doyle Childers has been pushing his Legislative Academy idea for about five years. It’s a twelve week series of courses on government and government operations for new members of the General Assembly. Freshmen lawmakers go on a three week long tour of state institutions and offices after their elections. Childers says his program would give the newcomers intensive instruction after they have served through their first legislative session.
