Missouri’s commemorative quarter that will join the other states’ special quarters won’t be in circulation until 2003, but it’s not too early to start thinking about a design. A contest aimed at coming up with that design has been launched by First Lady Lori Houser Holden. The search runs through March 28th, with those taking part asked to submit designs and ensignias that are in good taste, reflect Missouri’s history and heritage, and are enduring representations of this state. A committee will narrow the list of entries and send them to Governor and Mrs. Holden, who will then send three to five submissions to the U.S. Mint. The Mint will then choose one of the designs or create a hybrid using two or more of the designs to create a final product which will be sent back to the Holdens for their approval.
