State lawmakers are taking another stab at toughening Missouri’s law governing open containers of alcohol in moving vehicles. They’re considering legislation that would make it an offense for anyone in a moving car, driver or passenger, to be in possession of an open container of alcohol. State Highway Patrol Superintendent Weldon Wilhoit thinks the effort is a good one. Supporters say it’s too easy for a driver who is drinking to pass the container to a passenger when stopped by the police. A lobbyist for Anheiser-Busch says there are already enough drunk driving statutes on the books.
